Govt Plans to Revive Buckingham Canal

The central government has finally decided to take up comprehensive survey of irrigation-cum-navigational canals in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in a bid to revive the old Buckingham Canal from Yanam to Chennai.

Preliminary studies of the canal system revealed that modernisation was required before cargo boats can be introduced to ferry the local agricultural and industrial produce. The proposed comprehensive survey will provide insight into the actual status of the canal network in the three states. In the run up to the survey, the Centre opened the regional office of inland waterways in Vijayawada recently.
