City Architects Map Buckingham Canal in Quest to Streamline Urban Planning

Human Rights Lawyer Dr V. Suresh, chief editor at People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), recalled listening to stories of the Buckingham Canal while growing up in erstwhile Madras. “My father said that the canal was clean enough to bathe in,” he reminisced, adding that now, the waterbody is more a cesspool than a canal. “Back in the day, the canal was used as a waterway for transportation of goods from Vijayawada. Now, for an entire generation, the Buckingham Canal is nothing more than a polluted water body,” he rued.
