Mangrove Patch in Adyar Creek and Estuary Thriving

The mangroves, raised as part of restoration of the Adyar creek and estuary, have been receiving a steady stream of winged visitors, including juvenile cattle egrets.

At least 57,000 sapling – belongong to various species including Rhizophora, Avicennia, Acanthus, Excoecaria and Bruguiera – were planted on the bund, inter-tidal zone and on the eight islands in the river, a senior offical from the Chennai River Restoration Trust said. These varities are found in and around Chennai. Avicennai plants are found on the banks of Buckingham Canal, behind the University of Madras campus.
