The old and the New Towns and a Road Full of Traffic

For most of us who live on the other side of Vadapalani, Poonamallee just means wearying long drives every day, a high road choking with traffic, never-ending Metro constructions and potholes. Little do we pause to think about the old town of Poonamallee, from which this road begot its name, a town so old it has its own amazing history. An inscription explains why it was referred to as ‘Poonthanmalli’ in the times of yore — the words ‘poo’, ‘than’ and ‘malli’ conjoining to mean a ‘cool garden full of fragrant flowers’. Unimaginable now, isn’t it?
